Santos Dumont

Alberto Santos Dumont (1873 - 1932) became known, above all, for being one of the first – if not the first – to take off aboard a gasoline-powered airplane. Unable to cope with his media exposure, feeling responsible for frequent airplane accidents and their use as weapons during the war, Santos Dumont suffered emotionally. He exiled himself in sanatoriums in Switzerland and France, returning to Brazil only in 1931 to live out his last days.

The researcher Mr. Sergio Douglas Cavallari very kindly helped us understand this letter:

When did Santos Dumont write this letter?

I can almost guarantee it's from after World War I. In my research, I clearly concluded that there are "two" Santos-Dumonts: one before and one after the conflict (World War I). Even his handwriting changed, with the appearance of the "=" sign instead of the hyphen. (...) Many say that he started writing Santos=Dumont to value both his Portuguese-Brazilian and French origins. In my opinion, that's nonsense. He started using "=" instead of a hyphen, that's all, as it appears throughout the text of several letters, not just in the signature.

Another sign that it's from after World War I is him talking about his health. Several biographers say that, at that time, it was common for him to "disappear" from friends and gatherings due to depression. Afterwards, he would give some kind explanation, so as not to be impolite or feel guilty. In 1925, he was hospitalized at the famous Valmont clinic, near Lausanne.

Who was Monsieur Del Valle, the recipient of this letter?

Several personalities with the surnames Valle or Del Valle lived in Paris at the time. One of the most famous was the Spanish caricaturist and painter Evaristo Valle, who was exactly the same age as Santos-Dumont. The inventor was very good friends with people from the arts, including the cartoonist Sem (Georges Goursat), who was widely recognized as his best friend. The building at 53 Av. The question of who invented the first airplane still provokes debate. The American Wright brothers have their paternity recognized in most nations. In France, for example, Clément Ader holds the honor of merit. However, if they all contributed to the history of aviation, why not share the credit for this invention? Whether it's a matter of ego or authorship, for these great geniuses, it was difficult to share the glory of their revolutionary invention.

Nevertheless, the era of pioneers came to an end, and the blow was very hard for the Brazilian aviator. Dumont's frail mental state can be perceived in the letter he wrote to his friend Tissandier, the famous inventor of engines, in 1927. By that time, our father of aviation was already in a rehabilitation clinic in Valmont, Switzerland, where he spent several years treating his psychiatric condition. In the letter, Dumont speaks of his exhaustion, and that despite being only 54 years old, he feels like a 70-year-old man, no longer having the energy for activities that previously brought him pleasure. As for the future, I don't know what to do, he said in his letters.

After years of hard work that drained his health, aviation was becoming popular, and with it, the exclusivity of its creators was disappearing. Other events further undermined the creator's self-esteem; he had to admit that the Wright brothers were the creators of the first airplane, and, moreover, he saw his great invention being used for military purposes of mass destruction in the First World War. Perhaps for this reason, Dumont, as he himself states in his letter, no longer thought of living in a big city; he was tired of the hustle and bustle.

Although the story doesn't have the happiest of endings, it is certainly a lesson. Dumont was a genius who revolutionized the world, but he couldn't control his thoughts. Whether or not he was the sole inventor of the airplane, his contribution is undeniably part of the entire human effort to fly, and it is as part of a society, not as isolated individuals, that we evolve. What would Dumont say if he knew that his invention was fundamental in spreading the health crisis we are experiencing today? But also, how many hugs, encounters, and moments of happiness has aviation brought to our lives? For all those who believe that the qualities of a prodigy are innate, and that the person who was fortunate enough to have them will not need to make any more efforts throughout life, Alberto Santos Dumont is proof that the real path of those who have made their mark on history is quite different. In fact, genius has another synonym: resilience. The father of aviation, before his famous flight in the 14-bis, designed no less than 13 other models of his “flying machines”, many of them with their own stories.

This is the case of his airship “No. 7”, a fast aircraft that was created to compete for aviation prizes at the 1904 Universal Exhibition, but which never made it to the battlefield due to sabotage. Reports from the time state: “Two days later, when it was unfolded for its first inflation, it was discovered that the canvas had been torn along its entire length. The perpetrator of the crime (was he a psychopath?) will never worry the police.” The mystery was never solved and the sad end of the airship, before it could even take flight, makes the large-scale, and most likely unpublished, photos of No. 7 even more valuable.

But who would be capable of such an atrocity against a man who sought nothing more than the progress of humanity? Doubt still lingers in the air, and the search for answers incites creativity. At the beginning of the 20th century, Santos Dumont was recognized and admired in Paris, and it is certain that with such admiration would also come enemies. Could it have been another inventor who sabotaged Dumont's airship? Perhaps one of the other competitors at the 1904 Universal Exhibition? It is important to keep in mind that such an event was a milestone in the history of global technological development, and the prize in question was ultimately nothing less than making a mark on history.

In the years leading up to the First World War, humanity witnessed a technological leap that has impacted our lives to this day. If today our Pantheon is populated by athletes and Hollywood stars, at the beginning of the last century, inventors were the names adored by the masses who eagerly consumed the emergence of advances that are now part of our daily lives. From cars to airplanes, including the media and all types of household appliances, imagine what life was like without these conveniences, and we will soon understand how their creation impacted daily life and highlighted those responsible for their creation. The last sentence is mysterious, in which he asks Tissandier not to disclose that he is selling. The 1929 financial crisis began on October 24, 1929, a date that became known as “Black Thursday.” On that day, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) suffered a sharp decline, with a large volume of stock sales, marking the beginning of the economic collapse. Did Santos Dumont sense that this would happen, or was his decision simply fortunate? An interesting additional detail is the use of the letterhead of the prestigious Aero-Club de France, in Paris.

In 1922, Santos Dumont gave two photographs to a friend.

Handwritten letter from Santos Dumont to a friend.

One page.

In French.

27 cm x 18.2 cm.

June 27, 1922.

Paris, France.

Good condition Regarding conservation; the second page has a different color (we haven't identified the reason) which does not alter the text or the signature.

Unique piece.

Transcription in French

27.6.1922

My dear friend

Friendships of Santos Dumont

Translation in Portuguese

27.6.1922

My dear friend,

I still have two photos for you, and since I'll be in the countryside for a few days, I've left them on my desk in a folder with your name on it (this folder is next to a photo of Cardinal Mercier). This flight took place in Paris, at the Bagatelle field, in the Bois de Boulogne. During this event, Santos Dumont covered a distance of 220 meters at an altitude of about 6 meters, setting a new world distance record and confirming the 14-bis's ability to fly autonomously. This achievement is considered a milestone in aviation history, as it represented a significant advance in attempts at motorized flight. In 1898, he made his first flight with the balloon Brasil, the smallest ever built at the time. But it was with his airships that he achieved worldwide fame: between 1898 and 1905, he built and piloted several numbered models, such as No. 5 and the famous No. 6, with which he achieved a historic feat on October 19, 1901—circling the Eiffel Tower and returning to the starting point in the Parc de Saint-Cloud in less than 30 minutes, winning the Deutsch de la Meurthe Prize. This event was widely reported and consolidated his reputation as the first to demonstrate that it was possible to control an airship flight precisely and practically, right in the center of Paris. On October 23, 1906, and especially on November 12 of the same year, at the Bagatelle field in Paris, Santos Dumont demonstrated that it was possible to take off, fly, and land with a heavier-than-air machine without external assistance, before judges from the Aéro-Club de France and a crowd of witnesses. This feat was unprecedented because the Wright brothers, although they had flown before in the United States, did so without witnesses and with the aid of catapults. These wings were divided into three sections by vertical surfaces and featured a pronounced dihedral, like the 14-Bis, as well as ailerons positioned in front of the wings for lateral control. The covering was made of Okoumé plywood only 3 mm thick, demonstrating the pursuit of lightness and efficiency. The landing gear consisted of a single wheel at the front junction of the lower wing, while the tail was supported by two long bamboo booms fixed laterally with steel cables. After being damaged during taxiing tests on March 27, 1907, the aircraft was repaired and fitted with a powerful 100 hp Antoinette V-16 engine, but despite the modifications, the aircraft never managed to complete a successful flight.

These photographs of Santos Dumont's No. 15 are of great historical and technical interest, as they clearly show the construction and testing of one of the Brazilian inventor's most ambitious projects after the success of the 14-bis. This connection demonstrates Santos Dumont's close relationship with the intellectual and cosmopolitan elite of São Paulo, who closely followed his career and with whom he maintained a constant dialogue, even in exile.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1945/8243/files/carta_manuscrita_alberto_santos_dumont_1928_a.jpg?v=1759015665
caderno-de-autografos-com-dedicatoria-de-alberto-santos-dumont-anos-1910-1916
Autograph album with dedication from Alberto Santos Dumont (1910-1916)

Between the two wars, during the 'années folles', Alberto Santos Dumont and Parisian artists left autographs for a Brazilian industrialist.

Autograph album of French personalities and Alberto Santos-Dumont for a member of the Matarazzo family.

It contains 12 dedications, one per page, in addition to a 10,000 cruzeiros note.

The dedications are in French, except for the one by Santos-Dumont, which is written in Portuguese.

Paris & Rio, 1910-1916.

12.5 cm x 18 cm.

Good state of preservation.

One-of-a-kind.

Rare volume of autographs bringing together signatures, phrases and original drawings by artists, actors, singers and cartoonists of the Belle Époque and the "Années folles".
