Both collectors of primitive art, their friendship grew on the streets of New York. Born in Rio de Janeiro, as a child, the little artist already showed signs of what his profession would be, staging plays at the school where he studied. Even so, young Vinicius studied Law and graduated as a jurist, a title that allowed his entry into the world of Diplomacy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, it was in literature that he found his true passion. Vinicius de Moraes spoke of love and sensuality in his works, dedicated to the various women with whom he had relationships throughout his life, and his songs and sonnets about his passions are now part of the Brazilian imagination. After all, who hasn't memorized at least one poem by Vinicius in school?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEven so, we know that a significant part of the poet's life was dedicated to representing Brazil in several countries. What few know is that the figure of Vinicius de Moraes as a diplomat also came from feminine hands; it was his first wife, Tati de Moraes, who encouraged him to take the entrance exam for the diplomatic career at Itamaraty, which he passed in 1943, taking on the position of Brazilian vice-consul in the United States, in Los Angeles, in 1946.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGlimpses into the artist's private life at this moment are revealed in this letter he wrote in the same year. What few know is that this phrase, before being created or copied by some party, was actually written by Stefan Zweig (1881 - 1942), an Austrian who, in the 1940s, came to Brazil and fell in love with the land of palm trees and sabiás. For a man who claimed to be passionate about Brazil, he had a name that was a bit difficult for Brazilians to pronounce!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLinguistic misunderstandings aside, Zweig was one of the greatest writers, novelists, poets, playwrights, journalists, and biographers (phew!) of the 20th century. He is still one of the most widely read authors today, with an average of 300,000 books sold every year in France, for example.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOf Jewish origin, he himself said that his parents were Jewish by an accident of birth, since, in his family, religion never played a central role. This does not mean that the writer denied his origins; on the contrary, in his prolific career, he wrote about many Jewish personalities and themes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTruth be told, it was Judaism that brought this great thinker to Brazil, though not for the best reasons. During the First World War, political ideology began to mark Zweig's trajectory. Like many intellectuals of his time, he adhered to the Germanic cause, although he never enlisted as a combatant. Today we know that the real effect of the war was a bloodbath. As a result, the writer became a pacifist, advocating for the unification of Europe as a solution to its problems. Such unification never occurred, and with the Second World War came the persecution of Jews, which directly affected the writer.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThus, after various comings and goings, Zweig finally settled in Brazil, where he produced a significant bibliography about his perceptions of the Brazilian nation. Upon seeing the poverty in some regions of Bahia, Zweig was impressed by the ability of the people living there to find happiness in simplicity. Something that, according to him, those who had everything and lost it, like his companions from the Old Continent, were incapable of achieving. He was also moved by how Brazil was built through miscegenation, while Europe was undergoing a war in search of a pure race.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was during this time in Brazil that Zweig wrote the essay \"Brazil, the Country of the Future.\" Would this great admirer of Brazilian culture be proud of the future we have built today? Unfortunately, Zweig did not find his own future here. Disheartened by the advance of Nazism throughout Europe, and even beyond it — it is worth remembering that Getúlio Vargas, then president of Brazil, admired the philosophy of the Aryan race — the writer fell into a deep depression. As a result, in 1942, Stefan Zweig committed suicide, along with his wife. His popular work has been translated into 55 countries and 49 languages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eA great admirer of Jorge Amado's work, Zélia (1916-2008) began working with him in 1945 in the movement for the amnesty of political prisoners. Shortly after, the two writers married, and Zélia decided to help her husband by revising and typing his original manuscripts. They lived in Rio de Janeiro, Paris, and Czechoslovakia, where Zélia began a project to photograph Jorge, allowing for a record of all the key events in the writer's life. Finally, they moved to Salvador, Bahia, their birthplace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e Antonio Olinto and Zora Seljan were among Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai's closest friends.
