Glorias Authenticity Scale for Manuscripts and Autographs

The Glórias Authenticity Assessment Scale is based on a multifactorial expert evaluation that combines graphic analysis, material examination, historical coherence, market observation, and available provenance. It reflects a degree of well-founded professional conviction, not constituting a mechanical or automated certification, and is consistently applied to autographs on fabric, objects, and paper. The assessment considers, among other elements, the coherence of the item's narrative and documented history, the plausibility of the circumstances of its production, the chain of ownership, the conformity of the autograph with the known habits of the signatory in the period in question, the characteristics of the medium and the writing, as well as the broader market context in which similar items may appear.

LEVEL 1 – NOT AUTHENTIC

The examined graphic element does not correspond to an original handwritten autograph by the presumed signatory. The overall execution is incompatible with genuine writing, or the item shows fundamental inconsistencies in its narrative, context, or material characteristics. This result does not necessarily imply fraudulent intent and may include mechanical reproductions, copies, or other non-handwritten applications.

LEVEL 2 – PROBABLY NOT AUTHENTIC

The autograph shows relevant inconsistencies when analyzed in light of known authentic examples, historical context, and market observations. Although an absolute determination may not be possible, the totality of the analyzed elements indicates a high probability that the autograph is not an original handwritten specimen.

LEVEL 3 – UNDETERMINED AUTHENTICITY

The autograph exhibits certain characteristics compatible with authentic examples but also reveals limitations, ambiguities, or insufficient contextual support. The available provenance and historical elements do not currently allow for a secure conclusion in either direction.

LEVEL 4 – VERY PROBABLY AUTHENTIC

The autograph shows consistent, fluid, and spontaneous execution, compatible with known authentic examples from the same period of the signatory's life. The medium, content, and historical context are plausible and raise no significant concerns. However, the absence or insufficiency of provenance documentation prevents absolute confirmation.

LEVEL 5 – AUTHENTIC WITHOUT RESERVATIONS

The autograph exhibits all the characteristics of an original handwritten specimen and is supported by clear, consistent, and documented provenance. The historical context, chain of ownership, material aspects, and graphic execution unequivocally converge.

Methodological Note

Each assessment reflects a holistic analysis, including, among other factors, the signatory's known signing habits during the relevant period, the material interaction between the writing instrument and the medium, the autograph's internal consistency, and the broader market context, including known risks associated with frequently copied signatures.
