This letter, dated January 18, 1979 and signed by Pelé, is a letter sent to a fan named Jane Mendoza, who lives in New York. Pelé thanks her for the letter and expresses his gratitude for her interest in football and in him, assuring her that he will send the requested photo. The letter is signed with “Your friend, Edson = Pelé”, showing a personal connection with his fan.

By 1979, Pelé had already retired from professional football for two years, having played his last official match in 1977 with the New York Cosmos, a national soccer team in the United States. After retiring, Pelé engaged in a number of off-field ventures, including business, entertainment, and as an ambassador for the sport. He remained a highly influential figure in the world of sport, with his name widely recognized throughout the world.

The letterhead of Warner Communications Inc. (now known as Warner Media) indicates a collaboration between Pelé and Warner, which obtained the rights to the Brazilian star’s image. After his playing career, Pelé became involved in the entertainment industry, and Warner was one of the major companies that supported him in these projects. He signed contracts with several companies for media appearances, films, and advertising campaigns. Working with Warner was part of a broader strategy to promote soccer in the United States, his brand beyond soccer, and also to pay off his personal debts.

In short, this 1979 letter reflects an important transitional period for Pelé, where he combined his status as a football legend with activities in the entertainment industry, including his collaboration with Warner Communications. Pelé letters are rare and highly sought after, especially the older ones, both in Brazil and abroad: the trend is for their price to increase sharply.
