In 1974, Pelé was in transition in his football career. After 18 years playing for Santos Futebol Clube, he announced his retirement from Brazilian football. The following year, in 1975, the King came out of semi-retirement to sign with the New York Cosmos, beginning a new phase in his career in American soccer. In May 1973, Pelé partnered with Pepsi and starred in several television commercials for the brand, reinforcing his image as a global football icon.
The vibrant design of this poster, featuring Pelé smiling and holding a bottle of Pepsi, conveys a sense of freedom and joy, aligning with the slogan "Join the Pepsi people… feeling free". The larger signature, handwritten and accompanied by the dedication "Best Wishes", is authentic and signed by Pelé himself, while the smaller one, located in the lower left, is part of the original printing of the poster.
Most of Pelé's autographs are on sheets of paper, in books, or on shirts. This large, colorful advertising poster is atypical, especially because the King signed "Edson = Pelé," as he used to do in the 1970s. In fact, his autographs from that era are among the rarest and most coveted by collectors.
