In the 1910s, Santos-Dumont had already ended his career as an inventor and aviator. Living a period of progressive withdrawal from public life, he faced health problems and sought refuge in quieter regions of France. He frequently stayed in hotels and rest homes, dedicating himself solely to theoretical projects focused on the development of light aircraft. During this period, he ceased giving public demonstrations, remaining reclusive and increasingly critical of the militaristic direction aviation was beginning to take, one of the central reasons for his definitive departure from the aeronautical movement he himself helped to found.

Aircraft magazine , where this autograph is found, was one of the first publications specializing in aviation in the world. Launched in the United States in 1908 by journalist and enthusiast Charles Joseph Glidden, the magazine focused exclusively on the aeronautical advancements of the time. It published technical articles, flight reports, engine analyses, and aircraft designs, as well as covering major international air competitions. It became an essential reference for engineers, inventors, and pilots during the first golden age of aviation.

The page features portraits and profiles of three great personalities from the early days of aviation under the title "Big Men of the Movement": Clifford B. Harmon, Alexander Graham Bell, and Alberto Santos-Dumont. He set American records for duration and altitude in balloons and airplanes and later created the Harmon Trophy , an international award to recognize those who have contributed most to the progress of aviation. Bell, inventor of the telephone, was also the founder of the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA) , a group responsible for high-impact aerial research. Santos-Dumont is portrayed as one of the greatest achievers and pioneers in the history of flight, with accomplishments that forever transformed the imagination and technology of aviation.

This autograph is particularly interesting because it highlights Santos-Dumont's international recognition at the height of his fame, being mentioned alongside other great American names in the prestigious American magazine Aircraft . The format of the signature – A. Santos=Dumont – is also unusual. Finally, it is worth noting that the pioneer's "English" autographs are significantly rarer.
