Excerpts

Please forgive me if it has been so long since I wrote to you (...) it wasn't for lack of friendship, nor forgetfulness, nor discontent. It was for lack of time. Fortunately, I have a lot to do, it's a matter of doing good and being useful in what I have now; but all the work I'm involved in takes up a lot of my time, and creating relationships ends up taking up all my time.

The letter, written by Princess Isabel on May 24, 1901, and addressed to Benedita, possibly one of her ladies-in-waiting and close friends, has an intimate and affectionate tone. Isabel apologizes for writing so little, justifying herself by the lack of time due to her occupations.

Although it was not possible to decipher all of its contents, the letter is interesting because it reveals the busy daily life of Princess Isabel in exile, where she dedicated much energy to maintaining her social relationships. The monograms of Princess Isabel and the Count d'Eu are also noteworthy.
