This extensive letter, written by Gaston of Orléans on March 22, 1893, provides a detailed insight into his daily life in Petrópolis. He describes the heavy rains that have caused flooding and made any type of outdoor activity difficult, comparing the situation to a deluge. Gaston also mentions an epidemic that is ravaging the region, reporting that there have already been 32 fatal cases and that efforts to control the situation have progressed slowly.

In the correspondence, he provides updates on the Emperor's health, who is still suffering from slight swelling in his right foot, but is determined to travel to the Court soon. The Empress, however, will follow medical advice and remain in Petrópolis. Gastão also refers to news from Europe, received by ships such as the “Gironde” and the “São Gabriel”, highlighting the importance of this information.

With a thoughtful and detailed tone, Gaston describes the daily life of the imperial family and is concerned about public health. The letter reflects his closeness to the events and his active role in monitoring the situations described. This is the most interesting and detailed letter by Gaston that we have found to date.
