By 1902, José do Patrocínio was no longer the shining figure of the abolition of slavery (signed in 1888), but he remained a committed intellectual, often on the fringes of power. Marginalized after the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, Patrocínio saw his political influence wane, although he maintained great moral stature. He then dedicated himself to writing, independent journalism, and humanitarian causes. He also engaged in scientific and utopian projects—such as his obsession with dirigibles—which exposed him to criticism and isolation.

This handwritten note is addressed to a loved one, possibly a deeply trusted father figure, as indicated by the affectionate expression "Father and Angel" at the beginning of the text. The content recounts his visits to the doctor, his refusal of administrative duties or responsibilities, and his travels between addresses in Rio de Janeiro. Despite the difficulties, Patrocínio maintained his dignity.

This letter is interesting because it reveals the intimate and vulnerable side of José do Patrocínio at the end of his life, far from the political stage, but still active and combative. Patrocínio's writings are extremely rare.
