The Demoiselle was the last aircraft designed by Santos Dumont and marked a fundamental transition in the history of aviation. Developed between 1907 and 1909, it went through several versions – such as models 19 and 20 – in which the inventor improved the aircraft’s performance and lightness, using materials such as bamboo and aluminum. With its compact design, weighing around 110 kg and capable of reaching up to 100 km/h, the Demoiselle is considered the first ultralight in history. Its great innovation was its affordable proposal: Santos Dumont released the construction plans to the public, encouraging reproduction by other manufacturers, mainly in Europe and the United States. Thus, the Demoiselle was not only a technical feat, but also a pioneering symbol of popular aviation, influencing the first steps of sports and private aviation.

These extraordinary photographs of Santos Dumont’s Demoiselle are a true historical and visual treasure. They show different versions of the aircraft, including the first experimental version, allowing us to observe the evolution of its construction. Notable details can be seen, such as the lightweight bamboo frame, the bicycle wheels, the front-mounted engine with wooden propellers, and the compact and ingenious design of the whole thing. The images capture rare moments of preparation for flight, technical adjustments, takeoffs, public flights, and demonstrations in front of military authorities. What makes this collection even more impressive is its variety: photos in hangars, on the road, in the air, among the public—a true visual documentary of the birth of accessible sports aviation. More than technical records, they are vivid testimonies of Santos Dumont’s innovative spirit and his vision of simple, practical aviation within everyone’s reach.
