Luigi Denza (1846 - 1922) was an Italian composer. He was director of the London Academy of Music and a professor of singing at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, both in London. Denza wrote hundreds of songs, sung by the greatest opera singers such as Enrico Caruso and, later, Luciano Pavarotti. The most famous was “Funiculì, Funiculà,” which became a great popular success; Richard Strauss even used it in one of his works, mistakenly believing it to be a traditional folk song.
