Regarding the regrettable and sad events that occurred as a result of the friendly match held in Barcelona on the 23rd of this month between the teams of Botafogo and Barcelona, an unprecedented event in the history of football and universal civilization, the members of the delegation of Botafogo De Futebol e Regatas wish to highlight the noble and chivalrous conduct of Real Club Deportivo Espanyol, which is currently visiting Brazil, asking Brazilians in general for a fraternal welcome and the applause that it has given to other illustrious guests.

As a civilized people that we are honored to be, democratic and hospitable, we make this appeal to the fans to welcome these traveling companions of ours - loyal adversaries that we have encountered in our campaign - to European fields with the generosity that characterizes the Brazilian people, incomparable in the reception they know how to give to their brothers from other regions.

This letter written by the players and coaching staff in 1956 on board a KLM DC6 reflects the deep values of sportsmanship, camaraderie and respect that the club and its representatives maintained, even in challenging circumstances. The incident in Barcelona, referred to as a first in the history of football, appears to have been a moment of tension or conflict, and yet the response of the Botafogo delegation was one of diplomacy and dignity. By appealing to the Brazilian people to show hospitality and sportsmanship to Real Club Deportivo Espanyol, the Botafogo players and coaching staff demonstrated a commitment to the ideals of fair play and international friendship.

Signed by Garrincha, Quarentinha (Lebrêgo) and 19 other players such as Vinícius or Zezé, this letter serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of upholding these values in sport, even in the face of adversity. It also highlights the cultural and social role that football clubs like Botafogo play beyond the pitch, acting as ambassadors for their country and their people. As a unique historical artefact, this letter is invaluable in understanding the ethos of Botafogo at that time and adds depth to the narrative of the club’s history.
