To Philippe Petit, wishing success for his autograph book. Eric Tabarly.
Éric Tabarly (1931 - 1998) is the most famous French sailor in history. He won some of the most prestigious ocean regattas, ending the dominance of the English, who had been the French's greatest competitors on the seas for centuries. His victories inspired a new generation of great French sailors, such as Loïck Peyron, Olivier de Kersauson and Marc Pajot, who are some of the best sailors in the world.
In addition to being a pioneer in the restoration of classic wooden sailing boats, Eric Tabarly developed the concept of multihulls, with aerodynamic and hydrodynamic innovations that profoundly changed ocean racing. He died at sea, in the South of Ireland, and is still one of the most admired figures in France.
This item belonged to the French collector Philippe Petit for a book project. The meeting with Tabarly took place at RTL radio in Paris in June 1997, a year before his death.
