Mike Leigh (born in 1943) is a British filmmaker who achieved his first public success in 1993 with the film "Naked," which won two awards at Cannes. Three years later, in 1996, he presented "Secrets & Lies," which won the main competition, the Palme d'Or. In 2004, in Venice, Italy, he won the Golden Lion for the film "Vera Drake."
Mike Leigh's films often tell, in a fun and subtle way, the story of ordinary people with complicated problems. Leigh is considered, along with Ken Loach, one of the best European filmmakers of the 1990s.
The first Cannes Film Festival took place in 1946. It is the most famous film festival in the world. It happens every year in May in Cannes, on the French Riviera.
