(...) I was very happy with your congratulations and the signs of friendship that you kindly demonstrated.
Jacques Chirac (born 1932) was twice Prime Minister of France and Mayor of Paris for 19 years. In 1995, he became the twenty-second President of France; he was re-elected in 2002.
Chirac gained great popularity as mayor of Paris, mainly for his public transport policy. He also prioritized the elderly, the physically disabled and single mothers. Finally, he encouraged companies to remain in the city.
As president, Jacques Chirac is remembered for his courage and vision in opposing the 2003 US invasion of Iraq: he argued that Bin Laden was a bigger problem than Saddam Hussein. Chirac has always spoken out against the far right and racism.
This letter is very interesting because it shows the simplicity of a man who has always been passionate about sports, thanking the support of a journalist from the famous sports daily L'Équipe, an institution in France. The writing and signature, very elegant, give this document a special value.
