Known as JK, he was mayor of Belo Horizonte (1940 - 1945), governor of Minas Gerais (1951 - 1955), and president of Brazil (1956 - 1961). He organized the construction of the new federal capital, Brasília, a long-standing project aimed at promoting the development of the interior of Brazil. During his term, Brazil experienced a period of good economic development and relative political stability.

Innovative in his way of governing, Juscelino Kubitschek (1902 - 1976) is considered one of the best presidents Brazil has ever had, mainly for his achievements and his respect for democratic institutions. In 2001, he was elected "Brazilian of the Century" by readers of Isto É magazine.
