Collectors of objects (memorabilia) and autographed documents of great personalities are almost always “nationalists”. A French person will be enchanted by Charles De Gaulle, Marie Curie or Marcel Proust; an American will invest in Abraham Lincoln, Frank Sinatra or Neil Armstrong; and a Brazilian will seek out Princess Isabel, Santos Dumont or Ayrton Senna. National figures, a source of pride.
However, some figures transcend national borders and are every collector's dream: Albert Einstein, The Beatles and Marilyn Monroe are part of this very restricted club of people who are part of our common heritage, of “Pop Culture” as historians call it. These are the people who achieve million-dollar records at international auctions in New York, Paris and London: in these highly publicized events, incredible objects and documents are disputed and bring happiness to a lucky few.
But luck sometimes leaves this privileged circle and we find some rarities that belonged to these legends... Today I present to you an original check from Marilyn Monroe, the actress and singer who turned the heads of so many men, including the President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Found near Los Angeles, in perfect condition, this check was probably in her house or in one of her favorite bags on the days when, between recordings, the star visited the prestigious stores on Rodeo Drive, in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood.
