Botafogo is one of the most traditional clubs in Brazilian football, with a history full of important titles and legendary players such as Nilton Santos, Garrincha, Jairzinho, Heleno de Freitas, Zagallo, Manga, Gérson, Túlio Maravilha, among others. In fact, Botafogo holds the record for the highest number of players loaned to the Brazilian National Team for World Cups, and fans remember incredible games played by their stars against their eternal rivals from Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama.
The 1950s and 1960s represented its golden era, but 1962 was a special year for Botafogo: the club won the Rio de Janeiro championship twice, the Rio-São Paulo Tournament and also the Taça Brasil, which was the main national club tournament at the time. The 1962 Taça Brasil was won in a historic final against Santos, led by Pelé, considered the best team at the time. In the first match, held at Maracanã, Botafogo won 4-3, with two goals by Amarildo, one by Zagallo and another by Quarentinha. In the second match, in São Paulo, Santos won 3-1, but Botafogo took the trophy for having scored more goals on aggregate.
