Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was one of the most famous French writers, mainly for his works Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Miserables (1862). Renowned as an engaged writer, he made important political speeches in which he defended the ideals of justice, freedom and peace, against the death penalty and in favor of women. He befriended Etienne Carjat (1828-1906), also a French photographer, who spent time with great artists of his time, especially writers. The famous photographs he took of Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, George Bizet, Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo are still sought after by collectors and museums around the world.
With this iconic photograph, Etienne Carjat managed to show all the strength and depth of Victor Hugo, whose life and work still inspire French people of all ages and social classes. This edition, due to its period and high quality, deserves the attention of a careful collector, an amateur of photographs that portray the depth of the great men of our history.
