4315 Marilyn Monroe in class at the Actors Studio in 1955 (...)
Marilyn Monroe (1926 - 1962) was an American actress, cultural icon and symbol of sensuality, who became famous throughout the world. Marilyn began her film career in 1946, after working as a model. In 1955, she began studying acting at the Actors Studio, to prepare for her next dramatic film, Bus Stop (1956), which was critically acclaimed and won awards.
Roy Schatt (1909 - 2002), the author of this famous photograph, was the photographer for the Actors Studio, an association of film professionals (actors, directors and screenwriters) located in New York and founded in 1947 by Elia Kazan, Cherl Crawford and Robert Lewis. The Actors Studio is recognized worldwide for its work in teaching acting, using innovative techniques that allow actors to completely immerse themselves in their characters. There, he met promising young actors such as James Dean, Steve McQueen and Marilyn Monroe. As a mentor and friend, Roy Schatt obtained intense, sincere portraits of them, very different from the formatted images of the time.
In 1955, Roy Schatt managed to create some of the most moving portraits of Marilyn Monroe, who attended public school performances at the Strasberg Theatre. In this photograph, she stands out among the students in dark suits, attentive, especially natural and simple. The beauty that emanates from this photograph is particularly simple and moving.
