Candido Portinari (1903 - 1962) was the Brazilian painter who achieved the greatest international fame; he is considered one of the most important artists in the country. He painted many works, from standard proportions such as "The Coffee Farmer" to gigantic murals, such as the panels "War and Peace".
Portinari spent two years in Paris, far from his roots. This trip brought him closer to Brazil and awakened in him a deeper social interest. In the 1940s, when visiting the MoMa in New York, where he exhibited his work, Candido Portinari was impressed by a work that profoundly changed his style: "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso.
Among his most famous works are the "War and Peace" panels that the artist painted between 1953 and 1956. In 2010, after 53 years, Candido Portinari's son managed to have the work returned to Brazil during the UN renovation. The panels, measuring 14 m x 12 m, represented a huge amount of work for Portinari, who was ill and wanted to convey a message of peace. It was his last and most important work, which makes this document something special.
