While in exile in France, Princess Isabel signs a profile portrait.

  • Signed portrait of Princess Isabel.
  • 10.4 cm x 14.1 cm.
  • After 1889, in France.
  • Good condition conservation.
  • Unique piece.

After the proclamation of the Republic in Brazil in 1889, Princess Isabel was exiled with her family to France, where she lived until her death in 1921. In France, she initially resided in Paris and later in a castle in Eu, Normandy, owned by her maternal family.

During her exile, Isabel remained active in the monarchist cause, maintaining correspondence with Brazilian monarchists and participating in events and meetings aimed at keeping the memory of the monarchy alive in Brazil. Despite being away from her native country, Isabel continued to take a deep interest in Brazilian affairs, especially the abolition of slavery, a cause to which she was always fervently dedicated.

She lived a quiet life, dedicating herself to her family and religion, until her death on November 14, 1921, and her burial in the family crypt in Dreux. Isabel is remembered not only for her political role, but also for her resilience and dedication to the monarchist cause during her years in exile.

This portrait, in good condition, is a rare piece due to the Princess's beautiful signature.
