Prince Luiz de Orléans and Bragança was the second son of Princess Isabel of Brazil and the Count d'Eu, Gastão de Orléans. Therefore, he was the grandson of Dom Pedro II, the last emperor of Brazil. Luiz was born on January 26, 1878 and was known by his title of Prince of Brazil.
Luiz's family was important in the line of succession to the Brazilian throne, since Dom Pedro II had no sons, and his daughter, Princess Isabel, was the presumptive heir. Luiz, as grandson of Dom Pedro II, was part of this line of succession. The Brazilian imperial family was exiled after the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, when Luiz was still a child.
Prince Luiz of Orléans and Bragança is also often remembered for his controversial reputation and for being considered eccentric, which contributed to his reputation for being “crazy”. This perception was largely influenced by their peculiar behaviors and possibly mental health issues.
Luiz's autographs are extremely rare, and this one is particularly beautiful.
