Prince Luiz of Orléans-Braganza was the second son of Princess Isabel of Brazil and Count d'Eu, Gaston of Orléans. Therefore, he was the grandson of Dom Pedro II, the last Emperor of Brazil. Luiz was born on January 26, 1878, and was known by his title of Prince of Brazil.
Luiz's family was important in the line of succession to the Brazilian throne, since Dom Pedro II had no sons, and his daughter, Princess Isabel, was the heir presumptive. Luiz, as Dom Pedro II's grandson, was part of this line of succession. The Brazilian imperial family was exiled after the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, when Luiz was still a child.
Prince Luiz de Orléans e Bragança is also frequently remembered for his controversial reputation and for being considered eccentric, which contributed to the perception that he was "mad." This perception was largely influenced by his peculiar behaviors and possibly by mental health issues.
Luiz's autographs are extremely rare, and this one is particularly beautiful.
