By 1939, Heitor Villa-Lobos was already one of Brazil's most respected composers and enjoyed international recognition. He had spent much of the 1920s and 1930s traveling between Brazil and Europe, especially Paris, where he consolidated his career as a composer. In the 1930s, Villa-Lobos returned to Brazil, where he devoted himself to music education and was appointed director of the Superintendence of Musical and Artistic Education (SEMA), an institution he founded to promote music education in public schools.

1939 was an important year in his career, as it was during this period that he continued to compose great works such as Bachianas Brasileiras, a series of pieces that combined baroque music, in homage to Johann Sebastian Bach, with elements of Brazilian popular music. In that same year, he was in the midst of a creative phase, consolidating his role as an ambassador of Brazilian culture in the world.

Bastos Tigre (1882-1957) was a famous Brazilian writer, poet, journalist, humorist and publicist. Born in Recife, he is mainly recognized for his contributions to humorous and satirical poetry, as well as his pioneering role in the development of advertising in Brazil. He also worked as a librarian, being one of the first to hold this position professionally in the country. Bastos Tigre developed a friendship with Villa-Lobos and other important cultural figures of the time, actively participating in the intellectual life of the country.

Dedications written by Villa-Lobos himself to other great personalities are considered rare, even more so in this important year of 1939.
